...all got zero stars in crash tests of their India market cars. Maybe the auto industry taking a stand on overpopulation? Here's a Datsun:

This is about the best argument for over-regulation I've seen.

To be fair, the Ford failed because the Figo they tested wasn't equipped with Airbags.
Which are available on the Figo in India, as well as it's other markets it's sold in.

last time I had a chance to drive one of those goofy little bastards it was RHD and stick shift (mind blowing) on a Ford test track and I hit 70 in it. It felt fine.
The Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Accent I drove before it (both up to 70) felt like they were going to fall apart around me the minute the wind changed.

None of the mentioned cars had airbags. VW went back and put in front airbags and got their ratings to increase to 2 stars. The engineering on cars for that market is pretty substandard by our way of looking at it.

oh it's absolutely sub-standard. It's just odd that they chose an airbagless model when they ARE available in that region.
I remember the first time I was marketing the current gen Ford Ranger to the Sub Saharan Africa region (mulitple countries) and they were all amazed it had seat belts let alone airbags!

I agree, but its not just the absence of airbags that gives them the low score. Most of these cars don't have well designed shells/bodies with crumple zones.
An Airbag won't protect you from a metal car folding in half while you're inside it.
Another part of the safety equation is the culture. People don't always fasten their seat belts while driving. This makes accidents much worse, even if you're driving a 5-star safety rated car. And if I remember correctly, the law only mandates the front seat driver and passenger to wear a seat belt. Of course, the law is hardly enforced, unless the officer wants a bribe.

yea you are 100% correct about the bodies.
Part of it is that people just will not/can not pay more for a car and those cars cost more to make.

I bet the seat belts were quickly removed and put to another use. Did you get to sight-see much when there?

Yep. They don't just want to sell shit cars, they want to sell a ton of them!
If people can't afford buying a car because of the added cost of safety, they shouldn't be allowed to purchase cars with no such safety measures lol
